The Canterbury Society is concerned about the quality of life in our city. If there are issues that bother you, or a project you are passionate about, we hope you will join us. We aim to make a difference, but we can’t do that without the help and support of the people who live and work in the city.

Most cities of the size and importance of Canterbury have a civic society. Like other such societies, we are a community-based organisation, bringing together a diverse group of local people, with a shared sense of civic pride and community spirit. We volunteer our time and energy to organise meetings, carry out community activities and initiate campaigns which aim to improve the quality of life for everyone.

What do we care about?

We aim to respond to the concerns of our members and to the issues of the day.
Currently we are interested in topics such as:

  • The built environment/architecture
  • Historic heritage and tourism
  • Transport, including road, rail and cycling
  • Natural environment and sustainability
  • Leisure facilities
  • Arts and culture
  • The local economy
  • Creating a fully inclusive community

We hope you will tell us about your concerns and send us your ideas about what the Canterbury Society should be doing.

Working together

We hope to be able to work with a wide range of individuals and organisations who share our aims. In particular we welcome links with other local societies in the city, many of whom are already represented on our committee.
