This is a new initiative of which the Canterbury Society is a founder member. The aim of the group is to work together to enhance Canterbury’s riverside. We are very fortunate in that the River Stour flows through the city in many strands – at one point there are three separate branches of the river. However, in the past the river has been a neglected resource, despite being one of the most lovely chalk streams in southern England.
The Friends of the Riverside brings together representatives of the Canterbury City Council, the Canterbury Society, the Abbots Mill project, the Eastbridge Hospital, the Kentish Stour Countryside Partnership, the Kings School, St Peter’s Methodist School and several local residents’ associations. Members of the Friends of the Riverside are developing projects which will involve planting trees and flowers, giving people better access to the river, increasing wild life, and generally the opportunities to enjoy this beautiful and historic waterway as it sweeps gently through the City.
