Canterbury’s Buttermarket or Bullstake has been a place of congregation, ceremonial, and protest for centuries, perhaps extending back to the mid-seventh century. This illustrated lecture will explore the origins of the marketplace in the early Anglo-Saxon town and describe the remarkable collection of historic buildings that presently surround and define this important civic space.
