The Canterbury Society is seeking volunteers for two key roles on our Executive Committee: Honorary Treasurer and Membership Secretary.
These are important governance positions that support the Society’s charitable work, civic engagement, and heritage activity across Canterbury.
Both roles are voluntary and typically require a modest monthly time commitment.
1. Honorary Treasurer (Trustee)
The Treasurer oversees the financial integrity and health of the Society.
This includes:
- Preparing and presenting annual accounts

Monitoring income and expenditure
-
Managing restricted project funds (such as Blue Plaques)
-
Reporting to the Executive Committee
-
Ensuring compliance with Charity Commission requirements
We are looking for someone with:

Experience in finance, bookkeeping or budgeting
-
Confidence with spreadsheets and basic financial reporting
-
An interest in supporting civic and heritage work
Time commitment: approximately 3–6 hours per month.

2. Membership Secretary
The Membership Secretary maintains and develops the Society’s membership base.
This includes:

Managing the membership database

Monitoring renewals and new applications

Liaising with the Treasurer on subscriptions and Gift Aid

Responding to member enquiries

Supporting membership reporting and engagement
We are looking for someone who is:

Organised and detail-focused
-
Comfortable with digital systems (WordPress, Mailchimp or similar)

Interested in member engagement and growth
Time commitment: approximately 4–6 hours per month.
