Like it or not, Local Government across the country is being reshaped, with much larger Councils delivering all local services. Canterbury will be combined with neighbouring Councils, while Kent County council is likely to be abolished. This talk will provide an update on the rapidly developing situation, and consider questions like:

  • How can services be tailored to local needs under such large Councils?
  • How will residents’ representation be affected?
  • Will our Councillors become more remote?
  • And what can be done to protect our City’s status, Lord Mayoralty and local institutions?

In this timely talk, local campaigner and former City Councillor Dave Wilson offers a grounded update on the Government’s plans to replace Kent’s current two-tier system with Unitary Councils. With Canterbury likely to be absorbed into a larger East Kent authority, Dave explores the potential impacts on local services, democratic representation, and Canterbury’s historic identity.

Drawing on extensive experience across public and private sectors — from Aberdeen to Haringey, and from Citizens’ Advice to Westgate Hall — Dave brings both policy insight and local relevance.
