It is a big worry that heritage buildings and character of towns and cities across Great Britain are slowly and methodically being replaced by ubiquitous steel and resin – generic signposts, street lights, surveillance cameras (we have the most surveillance cameras per capita in Europe and second in the world only to China! Why is that?), digital infrastructure, road signs and new builds that lack the character and longevity of the ones they have replaced. Small independent shops are struggling to survive due to authoritarian charges including car parking charge rises, and big corporate chains like Greggs and Starbucks are popping up to replace them. Every townscape is starting to look like all the rest. The Canterbury Society is a great example of what can happen when people who care take notice and put their concerns into action to save our precious heritage that makes us who we are as a country and a people. There is also a reason why tourists visit well maintained historic towns and cities over the ones whose characters and economies have been systematically dismantled and replaced by generic bland infrastructure.
